Maasai Mara - the jewel of Africa

Written on: November 26, 2014   |   I visited in October 2014 This wonderful game reserve is located in south-western part of Kenya, bordering the world famous Serengeti eco-system. It truly is Kenya's finest wildlife sanctuary and one of the best in the whole of Africa. The wildlife is abundant and the gentle rolling grasslands ensure that animals are never out of sight. Birds too are prolific, including migrant birds and birds of prey.

The climate is gentle, rarely too hot and well-spread rainfall year round. Between July and October, when the annual Great Wildebeest Migration takes place, the Mara is a stage of unparalleled wildlife sensation. Approximately 1.2 Million wildebeest and zebra enter the Mara around the end of June, drawn by the sweet grass, raised by the long rains of April and May.The Migration lasts until end of October or even November. Experiencing the sheer mass of wildlife & predators is truly an unimaginable experience.

Once the Mara grass has been devoured and when fresh rain in Tanzania has brought forth a new flush there, the herds turn south, heading back to Serengeti and the Ngorongoro plains. There the young are dropped in time to grow sufficiently strong to undertake the long march north six months later.

Another excellent feature are the local Maasai that have lived since centuries in harmony with the wildlife. One can visit a traditional Maasai Village to learn more about their culture.

The Mara is a fantastic destination to visit all year round - one is simply guaranteed unique and exciting game viewing. If one wants to see the big cats, I would certainly recommend the Mara Game Reserve as it has some of the best leopard and lion sightings in the world.

Its situated south west of Kenya. 4 to 5 hours drive from Nairobi. It's next to Serengeti in Tanzania forming one ecosystem. We visited in February this year and had a full day game drive around the reserve. We were lucky to see the big five except the leopard. We also saw other animals including giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas and different bird species. We t... read more

Mara River gets its name from Maasai Mara which in Maasai language means the spotted land from the view of the plains having many trees and bushes that make it look spotted.

This river has its origins in the Mau escarpment of the great rift valley hence the need to protect it as an important water catchment for the Mara /Serengeti ecosystem from encroachment. I... read more

Very exciting park in Kenya.

I love Maasai Mara the most famous park in Kenya with plenty of animals, starting from the small five to the big five. Even for a two-day safari in Kenya you will see many many animals.
The annual migration is just wow.

Been to the Maasai Mara countless times and every time the Mara offers a new experience. The most thrilling activity here has to be the great wildebeest migration. So definitely my first stop has always been the Mara Triangle, anytime between July and December.

However, this doesn't mean that there is no much activity during other months! My favorite stops any ... read more
