Home of the flamingos

Written on: January 21, 2014   |   I visited in August 2013 Renowned as the home of the beautiful flamingos, Lake Nakuru National Park is located in Nakuru town. The park is located near the town which makes for a short drive. Lake Nakuru is one of the lakes found on the floor of the Great Rift Valley.
Over the years, rhinos have been re-introduced to the park and now make up the largest population of rhinos in Kenya. I was happy to see herds of rhinos, buffaloes and zebras and impalas peacefully grazing. It was also quite fun watching baboons and monkeys go about their day.

My guide was quite knowledgeable and explained that due to the lake's alkaline nature, marsh and grasslands, Lake Nakuru National Park is home to a wide range of grazers from gazelles to impalas to buffaloes as well as over 400 species of birds. The Eco-system of the national park is amazing with acacia trees spotted everywhere and alkaline swamps fringing the lake.

If you are lucky enough to visit the park during the flamingo migration then you are in for a treat. The numerous numbers of flamingos transform the lake into a colorful scenery with their pink color.

The park is great for picnics, camping and bird watching and despite my little knowledge about birds I was able to point out some different types of birds.

It was easy to spot wild animals unlike in most other parks. My most incredible sights were of pink flamingos dotting the shows of Lake Nakuru. The parks hosts four of the Big Five (except for the Elephant). The baboons around the gate are were very welcoming and absolutely comical. It was great to spot warthogs busy going about their daily business. Lions were in ... read more

Lake Nakuru lodge was decent in standard. The views were beyond words - amazing and having a bush dinner provided us with some great photos. The game drives were well planned and we were very fortunate to see a lot of animals, we even got to see the white rhino. The guide told us a lot of information on various animals and he had answers to all our questions and he... read more

Lake Nakuru is an ornithologist’s paradise with over 400 recorded species of birds. Around the lake one can find flamingos, a wide range of waders including avocet, while large rafts of pelicans can also be seen sweeping the water in unison.

There are well marked driving tracks around the lake and all over the park where you can enjoy a self-driven safari in you... read more

The Lake shore is flooding and it has caused the staff to make new roads. The old on shore roads are gone now.
Nakuru is a beautiful place, full of baboons (which we had a ball with), Vervet monkeys, some rhinos (but poaching is an issue), and a few lions.
Got some super images there. And my only leopard shot of the trip! read more
