Explore the highlights of Southern Africa by air: fly over the deserts and dunes of Namibia and the wetlands of the Okavango Delta, see the Victoria Falls and explore Zambia's South Luangwa National Park, fly over Lake Malawi and the white islands scattered amongst the cobalt waters of Mozabique's Quirimbas Archipelago.

Day 1 - Arrive Namibia

Arrive in Windhoek and meet your experienced pilot/guide at the airport, to review the itinerary and start the flying safari. The first flight will be over central Namibia to reach the eastern outreaches of the Namib Desert, then continuing to the Namib Rand Nature Reserve, close to Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon. Transfer by 4WD to our lodge atop a sand dune, our home-base for the next 2 nights.

Overnight: Wolwedans Dune Lodge

Day 2 - Namib Rand Nature Reserve

Enjoy a full day dedicated to exploring what is arguably the most scenic corner of the Namib Desert by means of spectacular nature drives in 4WD and/or on foot; encounters with wildlife are also possible - mainly oryx, ostriches and springboks - however the highlight is the sheer beauty of the landscape.

Overnight: Wolwedans Dune Lodge

Day 3 - NamibRand Nature Reserve - Swakopmund

As the sun rises, we take off from Wolwedans for a scenic flight over red dunes which become higher and higher as we approach the famous dunes of Sossousvlei. We fly over gigantic sandy peaks before landing at Sesriem to explore Sossusvlei and Deadvlei by 4X4.

In the afternoon depart by private aircraft for the most incredible flight possible in Namibia: We head west, first over the red dunes of Sossousvlei then across the entire Namib Desert until we reach the coast where the dunes plunge into the ocean. From the air we spot seal colonies, as well as the dramatic Edward Bohlen shipwreck. Our destination is Swakopmund, a typical German seaside town on the Atlantic coast of Africa.

Overnight: Swakopmund Boutique Hotel

Day 4 - Swakopmund-Kunene River Valley

After breakfast, transfer to Walvis Bay for a cruise amongst playful dolphins, habituated seals and diverse birdlife including pelicans, seagulls, cormorants and other seabirds.

Our next flight takes some three hours over the mountains of Damaraland and Kaokoland, volcanic plains carved into interesting shapes by winding seasonal rivers. Further ahead, admire the Etendeka Mountains with their flat tops and mesas, similar to the Colorado Plateau in the USA. We then proceed towards the Skeleton Coast with its long lines of barchan dunes chasing each other along the shoreline.

Proceed to the Hartmann Valley, a spectacular remote region in the north-west corner of Namibia, almost on the border with Angola. After landing on the sandy airstrip, a transfer by 4WD takes us to our camp on the banks of the Kunene.

Overnight: Serra Cafema Camp

Day 5 - Kunene River Valley

Explore the Kunene and Hartmann valleys, an oasis in what is otherwise an inhospitable desert. Our transportation will include a combination of boat, 4X4 and quad bike.

Overnight: Serra Cafema Camp

Day 6 - Kunene River Valley - the Okavango Delta, Botswana

Depending upon their seasonal migration, this morning we shall visit the nomadic Himba tribe of northern Namibia before rejoining our plane for the onward journey to Botswana. First we fly along the Kunene River following it as it winds through uneven mountains, acting as border between Namibia and Angola before gaining altitude and continuing to the Okavango Delta (stopping en route to refuel). We land near our home for the next two days and our base for discovering this unique eco-system. The contrast between our morning and evening landscapes - from desert to wetlands - is profound.

Overnight: Mombo Camp

Day 7 - The Okavango Delta

Explore the Okavango Delta by mokoro (traditional pirogue) to discover the micro-fauna such as frogs, birds and insects. It is not unusual to encounter larger animals such as elephants and hippos. Take game drives through unique habitats to encounter the wildlife and varied flora.

Overnight: Mombo Camp

Day 8 - Okavango Delta - Victoria Falls, Zambia

After a morning safari activity in the Delta and brunch we shall fly over the Chobe Channel where we spot hippos and the occasional elephant. Continue over the 'mighty Zambezi' to Livingstone, stopping en route for border formalities. Our flight will include the incredible Victoria Falls named by Livingstone in honour of Queen Victoria and known locally as the 'Smoke that Thunders'.

Overnight: Royal Livingstone Hotel

Day 9 - Victoria Falls - South Luangwa National Park

Late morning we shall take a three hour flight to the remote South Luangwa National Park. We land at Mfuwe and continue by road to the park passing through various villages and getting a glimpse of rural life in Africa. After arriving at our camp, relax and unwind, perhaps taking an evening bush walk with a professional guide.

Overnight: Nkwali Camp

Day 10 - South Luangwa National Park

Explore the South Luangwa National Park. Walking safaris are particularly popular in this region and are described as having been invented here. Our guides are especially knowledgeable and know where to look to spot tracks and game. Another highlight of the Luangwa Valley is the Luangwa River itself: gently winding, large, muddy and home to an incredible number of hippo pods. The landscape is diverse, ranging from thick bush to open grass areas fringed by indigenous trees.

Overnight: Luangwa House or Nkwali Camp

Day 11 - South Luangwa National Park - Lake Malawi, Malawi

After an early morning game drive, return to Mfuwe airport for a short hop to Lilongwe (Malawi). After clearing immigration, we shall fly over Lake Malawi, a long narrow lake filling up the southern part of the Great African Rift Valley, until we reach the island of Likoma with its many baobabs and crystal clear waters. Here there will be free time to relax, to enjoy the white beach, to do some snorkelling, to visit the local village and get a feel for rural Africa.

Overnight: Kaya Mawa Resort

Day 12 - Lake Malawi - Quirimbas Archipelago, Mozambique

This morning we shall retrace our steps back to Lilongwe and fly on to Mozambique. After a brief stop to clear customs, we take a very scenic flight, zig zagging to enjoy the view of the coral islands which make up the Quirimbas Archipelago: a beautiful patchwork of white sandbanks, local fishing boats and palm trees scattered amongst the cobalt and aquamarine blues of the Indian Ocean.

It is here that we settle into a small exclusive resort to enjoy three nights of pure relaxation surrounded only by white coral sand beaches and crystal clear waters.

Overnight: Medjumbe Island Resort

Day 13 & 14 - Quirimbas Archipelago

Two days of tropical indulgence in Mozambique.

Overnight: Medjumbe Island Resort

Day 15 - Depart Mozambique

After breakfast, transfer back to Pemba by regular small aircraft charter flight and your return journey home.
