At dry times, the concentration of animals rivals that of the much better known Serengeti – the game numbers are staggering: zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, elephants, Maasai giraffe and fringe-eared oryx all call Tarangire home while predators include lion, cheetah and leopard. It’s pools are shared by flocks of birds: green wood hoopoes, fisher lovebirds, tallish herons, white bellied go-away birds and giant kingfishers. Tarangire is noted for its baobab trees and splendid vistas of rolling savannah and acacia woodland. The strange-looking, Centuries-old baobab trees are believed by the Maasai to be the first tree in creation.
Today you will be rewarded with a visit and full day game drive to the stunning Ngorongoro Crater, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
En route visit a Maasai Village where you will meet the Elders, Warriors, women and children and learn about the beliefs and traditions of Tanzania’s last nomadic tribe.
The Ngorongoro Crater is famous for Africa’s best game viewing as there is an ever present abundance of wildlife due to the permanent water supply on the crater floor. Upon arrival at the Crater’s rim you will descend 610 meters into the Crater where your safari truly begins. Spot the endangered black rhino, black maned lions, giant tusked elephants, zebra, buffalo and wildebeest. Along the shores of Soda Lake you will find many species of birds including flamingos. All these animals in turn support large predators such as lion and leopard, and scavengers such as hyena and jackals.
Travel Lake Manyara National Park where you will enjoy a full day game drive. Home to giant fig trees, acacia woodlands, mahogany trees and grassy flood plains the contrasts of this area are simply breathtaking. With its open plains, huge escarpment, Soda Lake, dense woodlands, and distant volcanic peaks coming together in an area best described by Ernest Hemingway as “the loveliest I had seen in Africa”.
Animals such as elephants, hippos, impala, giraffe, warthog, wildebeest, blue monkeys and buffalo all roam the park’s territory. The park is also home to the famous tree-climbing lions and a small population of leopard. Manyara provides the perfect introduction to Tanzania’s bird life with over 400 species having been recorded within the parks boundaries. Highlights include pink-hued flamingos, herons, storks and pelicans.
Full day game drive before returning to Arusha for your final evening.
