Arrive in Johannesburg in the morning. You will be met by one of our representatives who will take you to your hotel. No trip to South Africa is complete without a visit to Johannesburg, affectionately known as Jo'burg. The city is a striking mix of contrasts. Incredible luxury sits side by side with abject poverty. It's loud, colourful and bustling and has born witness to some of the continent's most amazing historical moments. As South Africa's largest city, it provides a unique glimpse into the vibrant heart of this mesmerizing country. Spend the afternoon with your private guide from AfriFriends, exploring the city.
This morning a rental car will be delivered to AtholPlace. You will drive to Tzaneen (approx 5 hours). Tzaneen is a sub-tropical paradise nestled amongst the majestic Drakensburg Mountains is a must visit destination for those who love the peace and tranquility of nature. The Greater Tzaneen area has the perfect climate for producing some of the best quality sub-tropical fruits and vegetables in South Africa. The area boasts citrus, litchis, avocados, kiwi fruit, tomatoes, bananas, macadamia nuts, paw paws and more! The area is the top export producer of citrus in the Southern Hemisphere. The beautiful Tzaneen Dam lies on the north-eastern outskirts of the town with lots of recreational and scenic possibilities for the tourist to enjoy.
Head south towards White River through a hauntingly beautiful landscape, breathtaking in its vast scale – where the Lowveld savannah sweeps in to meet the Highveld like a sea of adventure breaking in on cliffs of mystery and romance. It has a rich and colourful history with hunters, safari traders, Voortrekkers settlers, prospectors, raiding warrior bands, transport riders and countless characters who wandered here in search of fortune. Staggering beauty encompasses you, no matter which area of The Panorama you visit – spectacular gorges, isolated buttresses, unusual geological features, rolling mountains, deep ravines, flourishing foliage and fairy-tale waterfalls. The only way to experience it is first-hand.
Leave Cybele Forest Lodge and drive east to the Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, renowned for having the best Big Five game-viewing in South Africa, if not the world. Located on the southwestern corner of the Kruger National Park, there are no restricting fences, thus enabling the animals to roam freely just as nature intended. The Sabi Sand is part of a conservation area that covers over two million hectares (almost five million acres), which is equivalent to an area that is larger than some independent countries. Game drives traverse an area of 10 000 hectares (24 700 acres) and strict vehicle limits at sighting ensure the exclusivity of your game viewing experience. Off-road driving ensures that you have the best possible view of any exceptional sighting and rangers are constantly in touch with each other to keep track of animal movements.
The entire Big Five is well represented, and other rare animals, such as the cheetah and hyena are often sighted. Various antelope species, from impala, waterbuck and duiker to kudu, bushbuck and nyala can also be seen. However, it is the leopard that is the real star of the show, with the area well known for some of the best leopard experiences in Africa. This shy and elusive animal, normally the most solitary of the African cats is often viewed both in daylight hours and during game drives. The Sabi Sand leopards have grown accustomed to safari vehicles, thereby permitting close up sightings and extraordinary photographic opportunities.
