About Kapolondo Expeditions
Kapolondo expeditions is founded by Tony Kapolondo and operated by Ene Lepp, Tanzanian and Danish citizens who have been operating and organizing tourism business for the past 12 years Tony Kapolondo who grew up in the national parks after his father Elias Ole Kapolondo being the first Masai senior chief park warden in Serengeti national park,Tarangire national park,Lake Manyara national park and Kilimanjaro national park.
About our safari vehicles
A safari vehicle in Tanzania needs to be tough enough to get off the beaten track and deep into the African wilderness, safely and reliably. It needs to be rugged but comfortable and certainly well-maintained. We have a fleet of Toyota Land Cruisers, arguably the toughest vehicles in the bush. We maintain them ourselves in our Arusha workshop. They are modern, clean, and in perfect working order. Each has VHF radios, seat belts and roof hatches for each guest; some with a capacity of seven window seats and the others with seating capacity of five window seats. Next to your safari guide and your itinerary, your safari vehicle can make or break your trip. You don’t want to be limited by a vehicle that can’t take you to the best places for viewing wildlife, nor do you want to lose valuable time on a safari due to breakdowns. These are things you don’t have to worry about when you book a trip with Kapondo expeditions

My friends and I (5 Malaysians, 4 Americans and 1 European nationalities) booked a safari for 10 persons with Kapolondo Expeditions (through Tony Kapolondo) from 27th June to 5th July 2016. We went on that safari and stayed three nights at Serengeti National Park and a few other national parks and venues. Unfortunately, we were scammed during the trip. Details are as follows:

3rd July 2016
Waited for more than 2 hours at Tanapa Fort Ikoma Gate (Serengeti National Park). Francis (one of Kapolondo's guide) claims that the company credit card had some issues and could not pay for the entry fee for the entire group. The total for that payment was USD 639.56. All entry fees are included in the total package, which we have fully paid.

Francis said that he had called Tony and he has asked Francis to ask us to make the payment first. Tony promised to meet us and repay us in cash, once we reach Karatu (2 days away). We were not given a choice and given the impression that either we make the payment or not proceed with our safari. We had to make the payment.

4th July 2016
Reached Karatu on the evening of 4th July. Tony did not show up at our lodge to repay me even though we saw Tony passing by in Karatu.

At this point, we realized that it was a scam as Francis’ credit card was working fine in all other payments before and after Ikoma Gate (he had to pay for entry into Ngorongoro Conservatory plus also the visit to the Hadzeby Tribe. The next morning, Francis assured me that Tony will repay me once we reach Mvuli Lodge in Arusha when we end our Safari.

5th July 2016
Upon reaching Mvuli Lodge, Tony was not there. This was the end of our safari. He had instructed his drivers to drop us off and leave the premises. I tried to contact Tony but was not successful. Later, Tony called me through the hotel's phone and said that he is currently not in Arusha and promised me that he has banked the money into my account. I will receive the full amount 2 to 3 days later. At that moment, I knew that he could not have done so since he did not have my account details. I attempted to call him several times on whatsapp but he just terminated the calls every single time. Mvuli Hotel staff helped me to call and surprisingly, Tony answered. He said that he has already discuss with us and terminated the call.

6th July 2016
We had to leave Arusha on our very early morning flights home.

To make a long story short, Tony has given many tall stories on how he will repay but as of today, he has not kept any of his promises.

And by the way, all our lodges were changed 10 days before our safari, we spent hours under the sun because the vehicle broke down at least 3 times, etc.

There are more than 180 other safari operators our there. You decide who to choose!

After extensive research in early 2016, we booked with Kapolondo Expeditions in August of 2016.

ONE WEEK before we were set to leave for Africa in February of 2017, Tony informed me that he is having issues with a license and asked us to rescheduled for June of 2017. I told him that this is not possible and I booked with another company.

Tony said that he received approval from his managers and that 100% of the trip costs would be returned to me. I've been back from Safari for a week now and Tony Has stopped returning my phone calls and emails.

I plan to take this to the fullest extent of the law.

***UPDATE***

Tony called me to say that the best option to get my refund would be to dispute the charge with my credit card company. I am in the process of handling this now. I will update as soon as I have some more information.

We bought a luxury safari, especially because we travelled with a 9 month baby. We needed security and comfort.
But, instead, we had to stay in budget lodge (We paid 4720 USD per person). When we told him we were angry, he did nothing. During all the safari, he didn't respect his contract, he never informs us in advance of change. If he was correct, if an hotel is full, he could inform us and propose us another choice, with eventually another price. We saw Kapolondo himself at the beginning of the tour and he didn't inform us of the change, even for the first night. He is a coward. He made on our back about 100 to 500 USD by night for 4 nights he made a change.

Worst the car wasn't safe, a wire caught fire, we had to stop in emergency but there was not hand brake, we had to run to stop the car with a stone and to put out the fire. We travelled with a 9-month baby...
At the end of the trip, we asked him for an amicable settlement. He accepted it and asked us to send an email. We did it, but he never answered.

He didn't organise our trip, the guide didn't know the program. We had to wait 2 hours before entering Serengeti park (while the other cars waiting 30 minutes) because he didn't book the hotel the day before. We did not visit some part of the program.

He didn't inform us that we have 5% visa charge before we paid. But, it's a legal obligation, he must inform the customer before the payment! He didn’t inform us that we have to paid for the luggage for each internal flight, about 100 USD more for the 3 flights.
We will file a complaint against him in court.

From our first enquiry the communication was fast, clear and helpful. We were very fortunate to have James as our tour driver. He was knowledgeable on all the subjects we threw at him - flora, fauna, politics, etc. and he accommodated our desire to take lots of photographs with good humour. He quickly learned the sorts of things we looked out for. He had a big challenge in the Serengeti part of the tour as many animals had migrated south but we were able to see all of the Big Five plus lots of elephants, impala, wildebeest, warthogs, etc.

We were on the 7-day safari which we would recommend as there is a lot of driving and trying to pack too much into a shorter time would be very tiring. We also visited an orphanage for Masai children which appeared to be well run and the children we saw were happy. Many were away at school. Regarding the vehicle, check that the seat belts work as one of ours didn’t.

My only real gripe was our trip to the Masai village. We were asked just as we were leaving Arusha if we wanted to go to one and were charged an extra US $100 (2 of us) on the spot. (We had earlier asked if one was included and were told which day it would be so weren't budgeting extra for this.) When we got there the welcome and tour was not worth it in my opinion, we were asked for another donation in the schoolroom which showed no signs of any educational material whatsoever, the crafts were selling at 3 to 4 times what you would pay elsewhere and we were told that one of the necklaces we looked at was from a giraffe's toenail which was clearly false. There are masses of similar ones which are made from coconuts.

All along the roadside following the visit there were Masai holding out their hands for money which didn’t happen in other areas. So, be warned! If you want to go, and fair enough, negotiate a lower fee and bargain down a lot. The trip to the Hadzabe tribe at the end of the tour by contrast was more interesting, fun and different and you had the chance to interact with them so what you purchased was more memorable.

February mightn't be the best month for seeing lots of animals but we had the chance to witness lots of animal behaviours that we possibly wouldn't have if there were more around. Regarding the tip as raised in another review, ask Tony when you book so you are prepared for it. We suddenly realized it would be necessary and had to ask him during the trip. His suggestion was reasonable which we were happy with but again it would have been better to know from the start. Loved our time on the safari so if you get the opportunity, go for it.

I was in a group of 10 on a safari with Kapolondo Expeditions in end June 2016. We had fully paid for our safari a month before. However, at the Serengeti National Park, Tony told his driver to get all of us to pay for the entrance fee and he will repay us the next day. Otherwise, we will not be able to enter. Left without a choice, we paid over USD630 for the 10 of us.
Until this day after 4 months and many, many empty promises, Tony did not make any attempts to repay us. He comes up with ridiculous excuses every single time. His last excuse was that he was having financial difficulties.
The reason I felt compelled to write this review was that going on a safari is a dream for all of us. Don’t let Tony Kapolondo spoil your dream. During the trip, we met so many other safari companies with very happy customers. MANY OF THOSE GOOD AND HONEST SAFARI ORGANISERS WE MET ARE LISTED IN THIS WEBSITE. You decide.

Beware. We appreciated all the promises and communications with Tony before our trip.
Upon arrival (which was late), he changed prices, gave us a junky car that needed to be push started daily, changed every place we had hand picked to sleep at, was late in depositing funds onto the atm card our driver/guide had to use to enter the park, changed our time in Tarangire to Lake Manyara park etc...

Although we had arranged for 3 nights in the middle of the Serengeti, we had 2 in the park on the edge and 1 night just outside. This meant most of our time was spent driving rather than viewing game.

He seems to have forgotten our booking completely and had to make up things last minute. Not a great way to spend thousands of dollars and months of planning and dreaming.

It is worth paying a bit more for someone that will keep their promises.

Let me start off by saying that I booked with this company based on the very specific itinerary that they offered and because of the great reviews. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!! Either "Tony" the company owner/manager decided that he didn't want to do his job and provide the exact itinerary that we booked and paid for, or "Tony" just doesn't have the clout and ability to provide the itinerary and tour that he advertised and agreed to provide us. I honestly think that he was more interested in cutting corners, so he could put extra profit directly into his pocket......

For the first part of our trip we booked the private safari in Tanzania and upon our arrival were told there is was immediate change to our first day itinerary. Tony tells us because of hotel availability that we were not going directly to Ngorongoro Crater, as per the itinerary that we booked. Instead, we are taken to Lake Manyara and told that we will be going to Ngorongoro the following morning. Now we booked more than 30 days in advance, so Tony should have been able to confirm the hotel reservations at Ngorongoro Crater. The hotel at Ngorongoro Crater was almost double the cost of the hotel at Lake Manyara, so I can easily see where Tony gets to pocket more money instead of booking our original confirmed hotel. So the following morning we drive out to Ngorongoro Crater, where we didn't arrive until almost 1 PM. We only had a half day in the crater instead of the full day that we booked, because we didn't go directly to Ngorongoro on the first day as promised. Ngorongoro was the best part of the entire trip and we should have spent our first two nights there and had a full day and a half, but instead we had only one night and an only half of one day. NOT WHAT WE PAID FOR. On the morning of day three we move on to Serengeti National Park. Our itinerary clearly stated that we were to stop at a traditional Maasai village and also stop at Oldupai Gorge on our way to the Serengeti. When we mention this to our tour guide he stated that we had to pay $50 to see the Maasai and that he wasn’t aware of either stop being part of our itinerary, so he states that he will discuss it with Tony and get back to us. All of this was supposed to be included in our itinerary. We continued to drive straight to the Serengeti National Park, where we are again told that we would be staying somewhere else for the two nights while we were there other than our originally booked lodging. The three day game drive in the Serengeti was as expected. No complaints with our day trips. The lodging we stayed ended up being acceptable and for the most part enjoyable, however the point is that we spent all four of our first four nights in different lodging accommodations and never had a chance to get comfortable. We did not get what we booked and paid for and it was a hassle having to constantly move every morning. On our way back from the Serengeti we did end up stopping at Oldupai Gorge and the Maasai village, but only because we raised hell about it over and over again. We were driven back to Arusha airport where Tony was supposed to meet us, but he never showed up (no surprise). We then flew to Zanzibar.

The second part of our trip was in Zanzibar. The hotel was booked on our behalf by Kapolondo Expeditions (Tony). Due to the discrepancies and itinerary changes during our Tanzania trip, I decided to email the hotel in Zanzibar to confirm our reservation. They confirmed our reservation, but also confirmed that our reservation was NOT all inclusive (with alcohol), which is what we originally booked and paid for. I spoke to Tony about this and he confirmed that it would be updated by the time I arrived, which it was NOT. Being sick and tired of dealing with Tony and Kopolondo Expeditions, I decided to just pay for the all-inclusive upgrade myself. The accommodations in Zanzibar were good and the resort was as expected.

Overall the trip was ok, but definitely not worth what we paid. Kapolondo Expeditions is definitely in the business of overcharging and not delivering what they promise. I would NEVER recommend them to anybody.

I move a lot for work, and I'm a very frequent traveler having been to probably 40-something countries and counting. It's kind of a tradition of mine that I take a trip every year on my birthday. Six months prior to it, I must have seen something online about Ngorongoro Crater or Zanzibar, and it really stuck in my head. After about a month of consideration I took about as much time off as work would allow (15 days), and used 2 years worth of American Airline miles to get first class most of the way and back to Tanzania! It would be quite an undertaking, given that I currently live in Hawaii. Because of the AAdvantage miles and American's partners, I had to fly east Honolulu-Phoenix-NYC-London-Nairobi-Kilimanjaro. I told one of my good friends about the trip (Danielle, who lives and works in Korea) and she was all about coming along. She flew west from Incheon and I flew east from Honolulu. We met up in Nairobi and flew into Kilimanjaro together. It was a long trip for both of us for sure!

Rewinding a bit...once I had the flights booked, I just needed a tour company. More specifically, I needed a tour company that could accommodate the dates that I had already booked for flights, and the things I wanted to see (Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Zanzibar). It took about a week of searching to find a company that had good reviews and fit the criteria I wanted. Then I found Kapolondo Expeditions on the Safari Bookings website.

It was a luxury tour, so it wasn't cheap ($4620pp)...but for what we got it was a great value, and by the way, if you look around, safari's aren't cheap. They could accommodate any dates we wanted, the tour was private (just us, guide, and driver), and the owner, Tony, was very responsive on emails and made sure that every detail was taken care of.

Our guide, Elias, was the best part. He is actually Tony's father and he's retired from being a superintendent in the Tanzanian Park Service! He knew everything about every animal, plant, etc. Who could possibly be a better guide than Elias? We got really lucky having him as our guide - ask ahead of time for Elias, he was great. Also, James, our driver handled all the rough roads and brush like a champ... not easy terrain in some places.

The tour itself started where they met us at Kilimanjaro Airport. They were on time with a sign. They brought us to Arusha for breakfast and a meet and greet with Tony, and then we were off to Lake Manyara for lunch and on to Ngorongoro. We stayed at Serena Ngorongoro Lodge, and it was amazing. The hotel is built of all kinds of decorative wood and stone right on the rim of the crater, it has a luxurious yet rustic feel. The crater itself was full of wildlife and made for some good safaris over those 2 days. The only animals we didn't see in the crater were cheetahs.

Next it was on to the Serengeti. Absolutely fantastic! We saw every animal possible and we got so lucky because the great migration was still going in in May (usually over by March/April). The Serengeti Tortillis camp was one of the best parts. This place was phenomenal. Our tent had its own bathroom and shower, the beds were nice, we had a private veranda where you can sip wine and listen to the lions roar in the distance at night. The staff were unbelievably friendly and took great care of us. Elias told them it was my birthday and they sang the Jambo song and made me a cake. I was sad to leave this place.

Next stop was back to Lake Manyara to the Serena Manyara Lodge. This is another very good hotel with a nice pool on the edge of a cliff and a bar and restaurant. We did one last safari down by the lake and stayed our last night on the mainland here. Kapolondo Expeditions surprised us with a private breakfast that morning with a table for two set near the edge of the cliff, 2 private chefs, and our own personal waiter - nice touch...great service. We then drove back to Arusha and got our flight to Zanzibar. This was the end of the guided tour. Elias and James were really great. They were very knowledgeable, personable, and great companions for the first 5 days.

In Zanzibar, we stayed at Sea Cliff Resort on the northwest side of the island. Again, all the transfers went smooth and everything was taken care of. This resort was a slice of heaven for sure. The bars/restaurants were great, the two infinity pools, the pier to watch sunsets, the spa, the food, the service. We also booked a few excursions with the hotel - to Prison Island and a tour of Stone Town. Also on the actual evening of my birthday we paid the guy who originally picked us up at the airport about $80 to take us all the way out to the northeast side of the island so that we could have dinner at the Rock Restaurant (if you've never heard of it, Google it, trust me). The drive is about 90 minutes and he sat there for 2 hours and waited in the van while we enjoyed the scenery and dinner. That was $80 well spent.

In conclusion, I can honestly say that this was probably my favorite trip yet. That is saying a lot because I've taken amazing trips to Cambodia, Iceland, Brazil, Peru, French Polynesia, New Zealand, etc. etc. I've been all over...and this was one of a kind. Kapolondo is a legit company...I know, trusting a website from half a world away can be worrisome, but I've never been happier with my travel experience. Tony takes care of everything, and you are in good hands with them. You can look him up on the internet, read the reviews, and on Facebook as well to make yourself feel better. I'd leave my email for you to ask questions, but I don't want random strangers contacting me! By the way, remember to ask for Elias as your guide, and enjoy your trip of a lifetime!

We booked a group tour and paid for it a couple of months in advance. We agreed with Tony on a particular itinerary that we carefully planned out, including 4 safari NP, a walking safari, two tracks and a list of specific lodges we wanted.

When we started the tour it slowly became obvious that we were taken on one of the regular itineraries instead of the one we agreed on. Every day we had to argue about the schedule and make Tony change our route. After one such argument we got our walking safari, only to be taken to literally a sheep-shit full field nowhere near the reservation. It took some more arguing and nerves for us to be taken on a "real" walking safari. Needless to say that most of the lodges were not the ones agreed upon in advance, though it being the off season I have to say the lodges we stayed in were more or less on the same level. Still frustrating.

Our driver guide was more of a driver than a guide, most of the time just driving us around in quiet. To top it all, the jeep was old and in horrific condition. The ceiling leaked water throughout the tour and we had no less than 6 flat tires, the last 2 happening in the midst of the Serengeti NP with no spares and no cellphone connection. Luckily we were picked up by another tour group, but than spent the entire day at the hotel waiting for our driver guide to fix the car. No need to tell you how expensive a safari day is and how annoying it is to miss one like that. Got to say Tony paid us back half the price for the day, still waiting on the other half.

In short, very frustrating. All that we agreed on in advance was completely meaningless as far as Tony was concerned. Don't book a tour with him.

After good reviews on Internet, I contacted Tony Kopolondo in July 2015 and booked the 15-day Kenya and Tanzania safari tour. I transferred 50% of the tour cost to his bank account in Tanzania on July 11, 2015. The original tour departure date was June 22, 2016.
I sent my flight details in May 2016, one month before the tour schedule date and asked Tony to send me the link for paying the balance money by credit card. He informed me that the tour was postponed to August 14, 2016 as other members of the tour postponed it. I reluctantly agreed to the new date after getting assurance from Tony that the tour would be 100% guaranteed, I paid the balance money on July 19, 2016 by credit card.
On August 10, 2016 I sent an email to Tony asking about the tour arrangements including who would be coming to the airport to pick me up. Immediately, he responded saying that the tour was cancelled as one of the members of the other team passed away. I was very disappointed and lost faith in Tony and asked him to refund the money.
Tony Kopolondo has not given the refund even after 7 weeks of the trip cancellation. After repeated follow up, Tony informed me that the money was electronically transferred to my account on September 16, 2016. Even after repeated requests for a copy of the bank transfer receipt, Tony did not provide it and stopped responding to my emails. Tony lied to me about the money transfer without actually transferring it. He cheated me and I lost US$5000. I want everyone to know the true colour of Tony. Please don’t do the same mistake and book any safari tour with Kopolondo Expeditions.
