Day 1: Durban, South Africa                             

On arrival in Durban, you will be met and transferred to your guesthouse.  You have the remainder of the day at leisure.  This evening you will meet your guide and the rest of the group for your pre-departure meeting at 6pm.

Day 2: Mthatha, South Africa [B]

Departing early from Durban we head South along the Kwazulu Natal Coast and then inland to the town of Mthatha (previously named Umtata), the home to many of South Africa's leaders — including Walter Sisulu, Bantu Holomisa, and Nelson Mandela. Mthatha  is also host for the Nelson Mandela museum, focusing on Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom and an exhibition of the many gifts received by Nelson Mandela on behalf of the South African people.

Day 3: Mthatha to Chintsa, South Africa [B]

Today is a day of cultural heritage and education. Starting with a visit to the Nelson Mandela museum, followed by a stop at Mandela’s birthplace in the small village of Qunu, and the Mandela Youth & Heritage Centre. Whilst in Qunu, we can visit the remains of Mandela’s primary school, the rock he used to slide down with friends, and the graveyard where his parents, son and daughter are buried. Qunu is a village where the women still wear traditional clothing and young boy’s farm, offering you a sense of the background and roots of Nelson Mandela. We then continue our journey back to the coast and onto the small beach village of Chintsa.

Day 4: Chintsa, South Africa [B]

Today is free at leisure to enjoy one of the many optional activities available or kick back, relax and enjoy the rugged natural beauty of the Wild coast beaches.

Day 5 & 6: Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa [BD], [BLD]

Leaving the coast we continue our journey onto Addo Elephant National Park. A benchmark conservation success, Addo offers a unique wildlife habitat, famous for the Addo elephants and the remaining population of the flightless dung beetle. We spend the afternoon on a game drive in our tour vehicle, in search of elephant, black rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard. We then continue onto our lodge for the next two nights, Kudu Ridge, located on a private Addo Game reserve.  The next day is spent on a full day’s game drive in the National Park in search of the Big 5.

Day 7 & 8: Knysna, South Africa  [B], [B]

This morning after breakfast our journey takes us to a region of startling beauty along South Africa’s Southern coastline, known as the Garden Route.  En-route to Knysna we stop at the Tsitsikamma Forest to take a leisurely hike along one of the short trails, which allow you to explore the coastal bush and rocky shoreline.  
We spend the morning of day 8 on a boat cruise on the Knysna Lagoon, home to the Knysna Heads and many species of bird and marine life. The afternoon is at leisure to explore this tranquil coastal town.

Day 9: Karoo, South Africa  [BLD]

After visiting Knysna, we travel over the Outeniqua Mountains into the Little Karoo to the town of Oudtshoorn. Lunch is spent at a local Ostrich farm and we then take a trip to the famous Cango Caves, with their impressive ancient stalagmites and stalactites before we overnight in the ostrich capital of the world.

Day 10: Paarl, South Africa  [BD]

Leaving the desert behind us we continue our journey to the town of Paarl located in the heart of the Winelands. Enroute we drive via the Victor Vester Prison where Mandela was incarcerated before his release in 1990. In the afternoon we enjoy a wine tasting sampling some of the famous wines this region has on offer.

Day 11: Cape Town, South Africa   [B]

Today we head to Cape Town where we get to explore the many attractions the ‘Mother City’ has to offer.  Upon arrival we do a city orientation tour including a visit to the Cape Town City hall where on the 11th February 1990, hours after his release from prison, Nelson Mandela made his first public speech from the balcony. The afternoon is at leisure to visit Table Mountain for a full view of this spectacular city (weather depending and own expense).

Day 12: Cape Town, South Africa   [B]

We start the day with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site Robben Island (weather depending). The Robben Island tour is 3.5 hours long, including a return boat trip across Table Bay, a visit to the infamous Maximum Security Prison, interaction with an ex-political prisoner and a 45-minute bus ride with a guide providing commentary. After we visit the District Six museum and a short guided visit to a local township.

Day 13: Cape Town, South Africa    [BD]

We start today by travelling along the Atlantic Seaboard to Hout Bay, a quaint village and fishing harbour with magnificent mountain views and beach. Here we take a boat trip to Seal Island. We carry on over Chapman’s Peak, one of the world’s most breath-taking coastal drives, to Cape Point and the Good Hope Nature Reserve. The reserve is rich in magnificent fynbos vegetation, birdlife, endemic antelope species and zebra, an historic lighthouse and shipwrecks.  After lunch at a nearby restaurant (not included in the cost), we travel on to Simon’s Town, a village with charming Victorian architecture, a naval base and a large penguin colony at the beautiful Boulders Beach. Returning to the city, our last evening is spent together at a local African dinner show with an interactive drumming class.
