Day 1: Arrive Cape Town + City Exploring with a difference

Welcome to 'The Mother City'! You will be met by our VIP airport service, handed your VIP travel pack and assisted through customs and immigration and baggage collection. In the arrivals hall, you'll be greeted by one of our private drivers and assisted to the awaiting vehicle. Transfer by road to your accommodation, More Quarters which is a fantastic one bedroom apartment in the heart of the action. It guarantees comfort, space and all the features of a private home. You have three nights here with breakfast daily in the shared luxury dining room - always a great start to the day.

Settle in and be ready in the afternoon for a half day city tour with a difference.  You will be met by our private guide and transfer in a vintage World War II sidecar for a brief drive around the city before being dropped off at the foot of Table Mountain. Then it's a trip up the mountain in the cable car (closed for annual maintenance last week of July to mid August annually) for outstanding views over the city and Peninsula (always weather dependent). It's then time to transfer to the V&A Waterfront and head out into the harbour onboard the only authentic pirate ship in South Africa, The Jolly Roger. It's a fun family affair with a motley pirate crew!  After the 1 hour cruise, you'll be transferred back to your accommodation.  (Three nights at More uarters with breakfast daily)

Day 2: Cape Point & Peninsula Tour

After breakfast, be ready to meet your private guide and head out on a beautiful full day tour (just you and the family) of the Cape Peninsula.  This trip takes you to the glamour beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay before crossing over to Hout Bay where you join a boat cruise out to Seal Island. Then it's back on land and up to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve via the stunning drive, Chapman's Peak - rival to Australia's Great Ocean Road.  AT the reserve, catch the funicular to the top where you'll savour the views of symbolic ocean meeting: Indian and Atlantic.  Lunch will then be had at Imhoff Restaurant in the quaint seaside village of Kommetjie (lunch not included, payable locally). After lunch, visit the African Penguin breeding colony at Boulders Beach in Simonstown before heading back to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 3:  Kayamundi Xhosa Cooking, Township & Winelands Tour

Today will surely be a highlight as you spend the day with your private guide exploring South Africa’s second oldest town of Stellenbosch.  It's not just about wine in this region as you will discover the day to day life in the Kayamandi township (meaning sweet home).  Enjoy a walking tour with your local guide, a Xhosa Mama who will welcome you into her home and share some of the delicious dishes that Nelson Mandela grew up on. A township tour will not be complete without a visit to the local Spaza shop. Then it's time to experience an authentic Xhosa lunch in a family home where you will enjoy various fragrant vegetables and meat dishes.  You will try home made ginger beer (non alcoholic) and mieliepap - a staple food whilst listening to delightful stories and legends. You will even be given the recipes on departure so you can share with family and friends back home.

It's then time to head towards the picturesque village of Franschhoek, where you’ll board the Wine Tram, a hop-on hop-off tour, which is the best way to discover the true essence of the valley, its vineyards, scenery, warm hospitality, world class cuisine, fine wines and 300 year history.  Enjoy wine tasting at Rickety Bridge, Dieu Donne and a welcome drink at Grande Provence.

Return to your accommodation for the last night in Cape Town.

Days 4 & 5: Hermanus

This morning, your rental car will be delivered to your door.  After completing the necessary paperwork, it's time to head off along the coastline a short distance to Hermanus.   Spend two nights with daily breakfast in a standard garden facing room at the lovely Abalone Guest Lodge which is positioned ideally to enjoy uninterrupted sea views and direct beach access. Hermanus is amazing all year round, however our favourite is June to November when you can whale watch from the beach - so sit back with hot chips and your favourite drink and watch a marine safari unfold before your eyes.  Cliff top walks, wonderful restaurants and lovely shops and galleries are on offer here.

Day 6: Oudtshoorn

After breakfast, it's time to head towards Oudtshoorn, driving away from the coast and to the lesser known yet hugely rewarding Route 62.  There is so much to see along the way.  We recommend:

  1. Bartolomeu Dias Museum which features a 500 year old Post Office Tree where sailors used to leave messages for passing ships, a life size replica of the Dias Caravel, the ship that Dias first sailed into these shores over 500 years ago plus a huge array of shells in all shapes and sizes
  2. Light lunch stop at the Sea Gypsy Cafe on the Harbour Wall in Mossel Bay before heading inland to Oudtshoorn
  3. Cango Caves for underground adventure

You will then spend the night in a family room at the lovely owner run Mooiplaas Guesthouse which sits on a 3000 hectare working ostrich farm. Whilst you are here, you can tour the farm, head on an hour long hiking trail and try your luck at the one hole golf course. Your stay includes breakfast.

Day 7: Plettenberg Bay

After breakfast, hit the open road once more back towards the coast and heading north along the Garden Route.

We recommend you stop for a light lunch at the Knysna Waterfront or the restaurant at the Lagoon heads, a very beautiful spot.  You can also board an afternoon ferry for a trip across Knysna Lagoon (not incl) then board a 4x4 vehicle for a drive up the headland onto Featherbed Nature Reserve. You'll stop at magnificent viewpoints and hear all about the history of the area, its flora and fauna.

Afterwards, head just up the road to the wonderful Plettenberg Bay and spend two nights at Hog Hollow Country Lodge in a suite room with breakfast included.  We chose this accommodation as it's outside the main beach, boasts beautiful views along the Garden Route and is nestled on a private nature reserve with ample space for the kids to explore whilst the parents relax. It is also a great base to explore the Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Elephant Sanctuary attractions which are within walking distance.  Other activities in the area accessible by a short drive include whale watching trips, tree top canopy tours and more. (activities not included)

Day 8: Plettenberg Bay at leisure

Make the most of your time today and explore the many attractions in the area which are ideal for children!

Day 9: Eastern Cape

Now it's time to enter the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. Its distinctive with its undulating hills, tall aloes, euphorbia and busy cape scrub not to mention the colourful traditional Xhosa houses.

Arrive at your accommodation, family friendly Kariega Main Lodge and enjoy three nights in a spacious chalet room with all meals and safari activities included.

Day 10 & 11: On safari

Enjoy two full days at this lovely safari lodge located on 9000 hectare wildlife reserve in the malaria free Eastern Cape. You'll head out for game drives morning and afternoon and have the chance to enjoy river cruises, wafari walks in the predator free section of the reserve and canoeing down the Bushmans River. There is a wellness centre available to all of the lodges on the Kariega Reserve (additional charge) so maybe Mum can duck away for some 'down time'.

Day 12: Departure day

Depending on your flight time out (not incl), you may have the chance for breakfast and one last game drive before you check out and drive to Port Elizabeth Airport where you'll drop off the rental vehicle and head home or onto the next exciting destination!

Listed below are hotels/lodges/resorts that the safari tour operator can accomodate for you.

  • Kariega Main Lodge
  • Hog Hollow Country Lodge
  • Mooiplaas Guesthouse
