which is located in kabale district south western Uganda, Set in idyllic isolation, the tranquil waters of Lake Bunyonyi are the jewels of western Uganda. It is situated on the environs of the impenetrable forest and the Mgahinga Mountain ranges that are famous for gorilla tracking. It offers an enchanting atmosphere of beauty that is quite different from the rain forest. Located 1962m above sea level and surrounded by steep sided heavily cultivated mountainous scenary, it is about 25km long and 7 kms wide, with 29 islands dotting the center of lake. The Lake has depths varying from 44m to 900m.The lake surface is a fresh 25 C degrees, hence it is bilhazia free and safe for swimming in. Bunyonyi means ‘the place of many little birds”; this spectacular scenary makes an over-night experience and stay at the scene, more desireable. Shores of Lake Bunyonyi have various islands that can provide relaxation to its visitors.
Bird life is prolific with over 200 species of birds being recorded. Here, Uganda’s national bird, the crested crane, is a common sight. The area is a must for the specialist in bird watching.
